Tokyo just before modernisation This 'Fuku painted map of Tokyo,' originates from the 3rd year of Emperor Meiji's reign in 1855. This particular version is a partially supplemented reprint from 1879. The map already holds a resemblance to European city maps of the era, featuring a flat surface, defined streets, numbered buildings, and the highlighting of new developments in red. The area designated for the palace is simply marked as 'emperor'.
